Welcome to the ...
What is FirstClass?
FirstClass is a communications system that brings together all staff and students in SD 23. FirstClass provides the following functions.
What is a message?
A message is electronic mail that can be sent to one or more people. Messages that arrive in your mailbox are considered to be private, since no else can view them. There are two different types of messages:
What is my email address?
What is a Conference?
A conference is a public mailbox where messages can be seen by all members of the conference. Conferences are great ways to discuss topics of interest and share ideas. Messages sent to conferences are considered to be public.
Why can’t I delete messages in a conference ... I already read them?
If you deleted messages in a conference, then nobody else could read them! Remember, these are public mailboxes viewable by many people. New messages always appear at the top with a red flag beside them, while old messages eventually expire and disappear.
Note: Any messages that you post to a conference can be deleted … but only by you!
What are all those red flags for?
The red flags simply tell you which messages you have not yet read. After you read a message, the red flag goes away.
What is a Resumé?
A resume is a place where you can add information about yourself. This information will be viewable to others using the directory.
To Edit your resume, select FILE --> OPEN --> RESUME
Security Note: Never add personal information (address, phone number, etc) to your resume.
What is the Directory?
The directory is a complete list of all staff and students in SD 23. The directory makes it easy to address messages to people by entering all (or part) of their name. Here are two examples:
EXAMPLE 1
- Enter "J D" in the TO: field of a new message. Press Enter.
- The directory will display all users who's first name begins with “J” and last name begins with “D”
...
John Dickson
Janice Donaldson
Jeff Daniels
...
EXAMPLE 2
Enter "Tom S" in the TO: field of a new message. Press Enter.
The directory will display all users who’s first name begins with “Tom” and last name begins with the letter “S”
...
Tom Stanley
Tommy Smith
Tom S
...
Note: It is never appropriate to send messages to person(s) that you don’t know. See note on SPAM below.
Can I email my teachers?
Yes and No …please read this part carefully ...
It is only appropriate to send messages to teachers when there is a specific educational reason and/or you are away from school. Do not email your teacher to find out information that was already available during class time.
BAD USAGE: What was for homework, I forgot to write it down!
GOOD USAGE: I have been sick for two days, attached is my homework assignment
What is SPAM?
SPAM is the process of sending unwanted messages, usually to large quantities of people. It is never appropriate to send messages to person(s) that you don’t know.
Note: SPAMming is strictly forbidden, and can result in the loss of FirstClass access.
Will I be Supervised?
The SD23 FirstClass Network is a public access system intended to be used for educational purposes. As such, student access may be monitored.
What are my Responsibilities?
